As we pass into these unprecedented times that we are all experiencing, we must remember that student/mentor relationships have been going on for centuries, and as we must TEMPORARILY distance our personal contact, we must adapt to how to do online lessons. No duets with our students, no touching their wrist or arm to help positioning or relaxation, and perhaps frustration with our new technical tools.
We are required to be deeper thinking teachers, to be able to measure and respond to anxiety from computer based perception, to think of new ways to accomplish musical gains, and have new games to play. Teaching is an art form that is always developing new ways to develop musical minds.
Sharing ideas, tips, forums used is helpful. Connection will make our isolation more bearable, and help us to realize that we are ALL in this together.

May/June Exam Session Update

We truly appreciate the challenges you face during a difficult period and also the time, dedication, and effort that has been made by you and your students in preparation for theory exams. We want to help you and your students to complete the year and achieve the goals towards which you have been working. Over the past few years we have introduced online options to provide teachers and students with greater flexibility and support in their musical journey. These online courses now provide us with the ability to ensure that all theory students can complete their examinations within the academic year (ending June 30) as planned. In the interests of safety, we are therefore replacing May in-person exams with online exams. Exam centers will be closed at this time and online exams will proceed.

What does this mean?

Students registered in the May theory exam session will receive an email with instructions on how to access and complete their exam online.
We encourage you to work with your student through FaceTime, email, phone, or other virtual means to continue supporting them with their questions.
A webinar will be available to walk you through the format of the online exam and provide tips on how to support your students during this period of social distancing.
There is no additional cost to you or any student that is already registered for the May Theory Session.

This solution will enable students to stay on track with their educational plans and support your ability to continue teaching during this time.

What do I need to do?

You will receive an invitation to attend a webinar by April 8 reviewing the format of the online exam. Please RSVP for the theory level that is relevant to your students. The webinar will be recorded and posted on the teacher portal for those who are unable to attend the scheduled live session.

What about practical exams?

For those students who have also registered for a practical examination in the May/June session, we will provide a solution by April 8 that enables completion of the exam. We are committed and dedicated to your ongoing music education and appreciate your patience as we navigate this unprecedented situation.

Sincerely,

The Inspire Song - North for 90 Scholarship

The Inspire Song - North for 90 scholarship is created for youth/young adults 12 to 18 years of age who are inspired to write original songs or music in any lyrical/musical format in any genre. The songs must be either lyric- or music-based. Up to 8 applicants will be eligible to receive this award.

The awarded funds must be used as tuition or fees for lessons or mentorship with a Yukon songwriter or musician of their choosing. The applicant must provide a letter explaining their desire to receive this fund, with information on who they will be mentored by or take lessons from.

Applicants may be invited to perform their original songs at an event to celebrate the songwriters who receive support from the Inspire Song - North for 90 scholarship.

This scholarship was established in memory of Aylie Sparkes. Born Peter Thiessen in Steinbach, Manitoba, he arrived in the Yukon in 2001 with a truck full of guitars and $5 to his name. In the first year he made his presence felt performing an unheard of 250 shows, mainly at the Discovery Bar (Taku), where people would line up down the street to get a seat where they grew to expect the unexpected. Though influenced by Hendrix, Elmore James, Robert Johnson, and Duane Allman, his slide guitar diversity was his strength, paired with his innate ability to draw his audience into his light, albiet country, blues, gospel, or funk.

He supported many local artists on stage and in recordings before releasing his debut record "Beautiful & Deranged", which was nominated for "Blues Album of the Year" at the Western Canadian Music Awards.

His creativity and love for performing, playing, and writing was felt by many in the four lears he lived in the North, before passing of cancer in May 2005 at the age of 38.

On November 25th, 2018 at the Canada Music Week Recital, local music students performed an (almost) all Canadian composer program to the delight of the Sunday afternoon audience. Roslyn Wilson announced the annual event, now in it's 25th year, reminding us of the unique opportunity composer's have at any age to have their music performed on occasions such as this. In fact our own teaching members are composers as well as performers. A variety of instrumentalists from violin to voice as well as vocal ensemble, piano solos and accompanists, graced the sanctuary at Riverdale Baptist Church.

A series of Composition workshops with Canadian Composer Christine Donkin on January 11-14th, 2019.

"Christine Donkin composes award-winning, critically acclaimed music that appeals to a broad range of listeners and performers. Described as “stunning” (ConcertoNet.com), "highly imaginative" (American Record Guide), and having “enormous impact” (The Washington Post), her work is promoted by several publishers and is performed all over the North American continent and beyond.

Christine composes music for musicians of all kinds. High calibre concerts at such venues as Carnegie Hall and the Moscow Conservatory are interspersed among frequent performances featuring young soloists, community orchestras, and church choirs. The Toronto Symphony, Symphony New Brunswick, Symphony Nova Scotia, Thirteen Strings, Elektra Women’s Choir, DaCapo Chamber Choir, and the Canadian Guitar Quartet are just a few of the ensembles that have performed her music in Canada.

Christine is frequently called upon to work with music students and teachers as a guest speaker, clinician, and adjudicator. Over one hundred of her pedagogical compositions, arrangements, and figured bass realizations appear in The Royal Conservatory of Music graded repertoire and studies books." from http://www.christinedonkin.com/about/

President's Report AGM 2018

2017-18 sped by at the speed of light, and I am grateful for the members and executive of this organization that make being the president easy and joyful.

This year we had some executive changes, secretary Keiko Fujise, and second delegate to CFMTA changing from Danette Readman to Henry Klassen.
Fall season had us celebrating Canada Music Week with our annual student recital with twenty four young performers on piano, violin, guitar, and voice. Our annual Music Teachers In Concert fund raising recital featured twelve members playing in solo performance and collaborating with other teachers to demonstrate fun combinations and styles with a variety of instruments, including guitar, voice, violin, saxophone, piano, and chamber choir.
As always, YRMTA members supported with many hours of volunteer time before and at the Rotary Music Festival.

This year, the 50th Anniversary of the festival had some members organizing and
performing in a special Alumni Concert that featured performers that were past winners who had
continued on in a music career. After several mishaps in organization, YRMTA recommended to the
Rotary Festival Committee to put the position of coordinator out for applicants that are interested.
As Professional Development this year we had two workshops, one an “in house” sharing of teaching
tips and management ideas, and one piano duo workshop with the Bergman Duo that were here to
perform for Whitehorse Concerts.
A big highlight was a visit from our CFMTA President, Tiffany Wilson, and besides presenting trophies
at the Rotary final concerts, encouraged us to apply to host a CFMTA Conference. We declined, but
offered to host an AGM for CFMTA instead.
Delegates Henry Klassen and myself attended CFMTA Annual meeting and strategic planning sessions
in Toronto. We are all excited about the Conference planned in 2019 in Winnipeg, where we will have a
student entered into the National Piano Competition.
I would encourage all members to find what talent they can contribute to our organization, for it is this
talent that supports all of our activities. I would also encourage all members to actively participate in
the educational and musical development that CFMTA and YRMTA have to offer. I gratefully thank all
members who have made a difference by helping make all of these events happen.

Report From YRMTA President

2016-17: How quickly a year passes. The Yukon remains stable in both its membership and activities.

This year we welcomed new secretary Bryn Knight, to the executive, and thanked Henry Klassen for many years of secretarial services and support. Henry has taken on the role of RCM representative in the YRMTA. We also welcomed Brenda Lee Katerenchuk as webmaster.

We celebrated Canada Music Week with our annual student recital with nineteen performers ages six to seventeen on piano, violin, guitar, voice, and even their own compositions.

Our annual Music Teachers In Concert fundraising recital featured teachers in solo performance and collaborating with other teachers to demonstrate fun combinations and styles with a variety of instruments.

This year YRMTA members took on the role of organizing Four Gallery Concerts in the Yukon Arts Centre Gallery as part of Whitehorse Concerts presentations. These new events were very successful, and showed a great way to present classical music to the general public in a beautiful setting. One of the highlights was a presentation of eight of our members playing Mussorgsky’s Pictures At An Exhibition for six pianists, two pianos, and two percussionists. A music work about art presented in an Art Gallery !

Another first for YRMTA this year was an opportunity to host a Young Artist from Alberta, Louisa Lou, one of the Competitors at the Canadian National Piano Competition held in Baltimore. Being able to bring a young artist to the Yukon was something that we would like to continue, and helps us to participate more fully within the National Organization.

A definite highlight of the year was being able to represent the Yukon with delegate Danette Readman in Baltimore at the collaborative MTNA and CFMTA Conference. We returned with a lot of information, stimulation, and inspiration to share, and we feel closer to our Canadian network of colleagues.

YRTMA continues to support our annual Rotary Music Festival with many hours of volunteer work. We have been able to encourage our students in their endeavours, and have expanded our new collaborative classes to include guitar.

As Professional Development this year we are hosting a workshop with Adam Con, University Of Victoria Alexander Technique Clinician.

As always, being able to watch children develop through music education is a great privilege, and we are proud to strive for high standards in growth for both our students and ourselves.

The Young Artist Series was initiated in 1942 under the direction of Saskatchewan music educator, Dr. Lyell Gustin, and the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Associations. The initiative was to give talented young performers of registered music teachers an opportunity to gain concert tour experience. The Young Artist Series now operates in five regions of Canada: Atlantic, Ontario, Western, British Columbia and Alberta. Biennially more than twenty-five communities have the priviolege of hearing these emerging artists. Many of the previous Young Artists have become renowned musicians — Angela Cheng, Valdine Anderson, and Andrew Dawes to name a few.

The 2017 Alberta Young Artist is the winner of the Alberta Provincial Round of the CFMTA National Piano Competition. You may have had the opportunity to hear and experience the calibre of our Alberta talent with the previous Alberta Young Artists — Allison Hillier (2015), Peter Krejcar (2013), Quinn Gomez (2011) and Wesley Chiu (2009).
